Dr. Stine's Cold Recipe

Common colds generally last approximately 10 days, although some symptoms may not completely disappear until two weeks or more. Symptoms usually begin improving by the 7th or 8th day. Colds are caused by viruses and do not resolve more quickly by using antibiotics.

This is what I use for my own cold symptoms:

  1. Generic Afrin nasal spray - Two sprays in each nostril twice a day every twelve hours. (For no more than five days!!!)

  2. Some type of oral decongestant (or decongestant-antihistamine combination) use during daytime hours only.
I feel that pseudoephedrine (generic Sudafed) is the most effective product available. It is a decongestant only and can cause sleeplessness at night. It is available without a prescription, but you will have to ask the pharmacist for it. You will be asked to show a photo ID and sign a log.

  3. Use an antihistamine such as Benadryl at bedtime. Any antihistamine product that has "PM" should work also.

  4. If symptoms show no sign of improvement after 7 to 8 days or are worsening, please call our office to make an appointment.
